Davao del Norte State College visits Hiroshima University

NERPS meeting with the Davao del Norte State College for potential collaboration

May 23, 2023. After a courtesy visit to Prof. Shinji Kaneko, NERPS Director and Hiroshima University Executive Vice President for Global Initiatives, the top management of the Davao del Norte State College (DNSC) discussed with NERPS core members potential collaboration in conducting research workshops, joint publications, symposiums, and training programs.

DNSC is a public tertiary institution in the Philippines. Led by Dr. Joy Sorrosa, the first female President, the College has received recognition from several prestigious award-giving bodies for its efforts in fisheries conservation and management, as well as for strengthening local and international partnerships. The College successfully developed a comprehensive five-year Strategic Plan (2020 – 2024), which outlines strategies to realize its vision of becoming a Premier Higher Institution in Agri-Fisheries and Socio-Cultural Development within the ASEAN Region. It also operates an Indigenous People’s (IP’s) Extension campus in Talaingod, aimed at providing higher education opportunities to Indigenous peoples residing in geographically isolated and disadvantaged areas (GIDAS), thereby facilitating conflict transformation.

One of the key discussion points was to intersect fisheries education with social sciences toward the objective of generating employment in conflict-affected areas, training prisoners for employment opportunities, and promoting ecotourism. Plans for joint activities were also discussed, including the annual NERPS conference and the NERPS webinar series.

Since 2018, NERPS has been committed to collaborating and networking with other universities in an effort to exchange innovative interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary education and research projects.
