Meet the First Keynote Speaker of NERPS 2027: Prof. Dr. Dewi Fortuna Anwar

We are honored to announce that Prof. Dr. Dewi Fortuna Anwar, Chairman of the Board of Directors, The Habibie Center (THC), will be the first keynote speaker at the NERPS 2027 Conference at the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) in Jakarta, Indonesia.

Prof. Dr. Dewi Fortuna Anwar is a leading Indonesian scholar and policy practitioner whose career spans academia, government service and international policy engagement. Her research and professional expertise focus on Indonesian foreign policy, ASEAN regionalism, democratisation, and regional political and security affairs. She currently serves as an Academician of the Social Science Commission at the Indonesian Academy of Sciences (AIPI), Research Professor at the Research Centre for Politics of the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN), and Chairman of the Board of Directors of The Habibie Center. She is also the Co-Founder of the Foreign Policy Community of Indonesia (FPCI).

Prof. Anwar earned her PhD from Monash University, Melbourne, Australia, with a dissertation titled “ASEAN as an Aspect of Indonesian Foreign Policy.” She previously obtained her MA and BA (Hons) from the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS), University of London.

With extensive experience in academia, research, and government, Prof. Anwar has played a significant role in shaping discussions on Indonesian foreign policy, regional cooperation, and international affairs. From 2010 to 2017, she served as Deputy Secretary to the Vice President of the Republic of Indonesia, overseeing political affairs and government policy support. Earlier, from 1998 to 1999, she held several roles related to global affairs, including Assistant for Global Affairs to the Vice President, Presidential Spokesperson, and Assistant to the Minister of State Secretary on Foreign Affairs.

Her academic and research leadership includes serving as Deputy for Social Sciences and Humanities at the Indonesian Institute of Sciences (LIPI) from 2001 to 2010, before continuing her work as a Research Professor at the Research Centre for Politics, first at LIPI and subsequently at BRIN. Her research and academic contributions have also taken her to leading international institutions, where she has held distinguished visiting appointments and academic chairs.

Prof. Anwar has held several prestigious international academic positions, including the Pok Rafeah Chair at the Institute of Malaysian and International Studies (IKMAS), National University of Malaysia (UKM), in 2025; the Kippenberger Visiting Chair at Victoria University of Wellington, New Zealand, in 2018; and Distinguished Visiting Professor appointments at the S. Rajaratnam School of International Studies (RSIS), Nanyang Technological University, Singapore, from 2017 to 2018, and the Paul H. Nitze School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS), Johns Hopkins University, United States, in 2007.

She also contributes to international policy and research networks through various advisory and board positions. These include the International Advisory Panel of ISEAS – Yusof Ishak Institute, the Advisory Board of La Trobe Asia, the UWA Public Policy Institute at the University of Western Australia, and the Board of the Centre for Policy Development (CPD), Australia. She was also a Foundation Board Member of the Centre for Humanitarian Dialogue in Geneva from 2019 to 2025 and a Governing Board Member of the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI) from 2010 to 2020. She is also a Non-Resident Fellow at the Lowy Institute.
