Positive Peace Society Paper Crane Workshop

On June 4, 2024, the Positive Peace Society (PPS) of Hiroshima University held a meaningful event titled “Paper Crane Workshop” in observance of the International Day of Innocent Children Victims of Aggression. The event took place at the lobby of the IDEC building and was attended by 20 participants, including international students, faculty members, and local community members. The purpose of the day was to acknowledge the pain suffered by children worldwide who are victims of physical, mental, and emotional abuse. The workshop served as an opportunity to reflect on this serious issue and to recommit our community to the goal of ending all forms of violence against children.

The event began with an opening address by PPS members, who highlighted the significance of the International Day of Innocent Children Victims of Aggression. The chairman emphasized the importance of raising awareness about the various forms of violence that children endure and the need for collective action to protect and nurture the younger generation. The highlight of the event was the paper crane folding activity. Paper cranes, a symbol of peace and hope, were chosen for their significance in Japanese culture and their association with the story of Sadako Sasaki, a young girl who became a symbol of innocent victims of war. The participants were guided through the process of folding paper cranes, with volunteers and facilitators providing step-by-step instructions. As the participants folded their paper cranes, they engaged in conversations about the impact of violence on children and shared ideas on how to promote peace and protect children’s rights. This interactive element of the workshop fostered a sense of community and solidarity among the participants.

Additionally, a discussion session was held where attendees could express their thoughts and feelings about the stories of child victims of aggression from around the world. This session included personal anecdotes, expert insights, and a collective reflection on how communities can contribute to a more peaceful and safe environment for children. Throughout the event, participants were attentive and engaged, asking thoughtful questions and sharing their own experiences. They found the workshop to be deeply moving and appreciated the opportunity to contribute to a cause that resonates with universal values of empathy and compassion.

The Positive Peace Society is committed to organizing such impactful events that promote peace and understanding within the Hiroshima University community and beyond. We are grateful to all the participants for their involvement and look forward to hosting more events that inspire positive action and foster a harmonious and respectful community. Join us in our future endeavors as we continue to work towards a world free of violence against children and where every child can grow up in a safe and nurturing environment.

Sincerely,
The Positive Peace Society Team
