35th NERPS Webinar: Warming in major Asian cities: Are We Prepared to Live with 50° C?

October 24, 2024 (Thursday, 15:00 -16:00 PM JST)

About the Webinar

Traditionally, urban warming has been overlooked across the world. Though urban heat island is a well understood phenomenon at various spatiotemporal scales, widespread warming at the urban scale can have cascading impacts on the border urban environment, including heatwave and energy demand. Empirical evidence suggests that urban warming has become a matter of grave concern for many large cities. Drawing examples from multiple Asian large cities, this work delivers space time variations of urban warming which is evidently affecting microclimate. Findings revealed that policy-practice gaps, inadequate local level climate management strategies and poor heat management plan are important drivers affecting urban dwellers from increased heat. Concerted efforts are therefore needed to curb warming at the urban scale to secure marginalised and disabled communities, especially in Asian large cities.

About the NERPS Webinar Series

The Network for Education and Research on Peace and Sustainability (NERPS) at Hiroshima University in Japan is hosting a series of webinars on the relationship between peace and sustainability in the context of environmental, socio-political, economic, and technological transformations. This series is situated within the urgent need to deal with the implications of global change, including the COVID-19 pandemic, for peace and sustainability. The webinar sessions serve as a platform for rethinking and updating the current discourse on peace and sustainability amidst these global challenges and transformations. Leading experts will discuss the role of resources, digital technologies, migration, governance, and education in peacebuilding, conflict mitigation, humanitarian aid, and capacity-building, among other components that contribute to the achievement of the Sustainability Development Goals, particularly that of Goal 16 on Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions.
