Positive Peace Society (PPS) Movie Screening

Friday, 1st December, 2023

On Friday, December 1st, 2023, the Positive Peace Society (PPS) hosted a movie screening at the multipurpose room of MIRAI CREA, Higashihiroshima campus. This event was attended by over 60 participants, including international students, faculty members, and local community members, making it a diverse gathering of individuals united by a common interest in global peace and understanding.

The featured movie was “Farha,” a powerful drama from 2021 that tells the poignant story of a Palestinian girl’s struggle and determination to pursue education amidst the turmoil of her homeland. This film provided a deeply moving portrayal of the human spirit’s resilience in the face of adversity, and it resonated strongly with the audience.

Before the screening, a brief introduction was given by the members of the Positive Peace Society, highlighting the importance of understanding different cultural and political contexts through media. The film not only shed light on the Palestinian experience but also served as a catalyst for broader discussions on the ongoing conflict between Israel and Palestine. Following the movie, a discussion session was held where participants engaged in a thoughtful dialogue about the ongoing war between Israel and Palestine. This conversation was anchored in the principles of positive peace, focusing on how sustainable peace can be achieved through education, empathy, and non-violent means. The discussion emphasized the need for mutual respect and understanding as fundamental components of resolving long-standing conflicts.

The event also highlighted how the concept of positive peace can be applied in various contexts, including political dissent within Japanese universities. The movie screening and subsequent discussion served as an alternative platform for expressing political dissent and advocating for peace in a constructive and respectful manner.

Participants were very engaged throughout the session, asking insightful questions and sharing their perspectives on how education and cultural exchange can contribute to peacebuilding efforts. The dialogue reinforced the idea that fostering a peaceful and inclusive community requires active participation and a willingness to understand diverse viewpoints.

The Positive Peace Society is committed to organizing such enriching events that provide valuable learning experiences and promote the ideals of peace and harmony. We are grateful to all the attendees for their participation and look forward to hosting more events that inspire and educate.

Stay tuned for more enriching events from the Positive Peace Society, as we continue to build a safer, harmonious, and respectful community at Hiroshima University.

Sincerely,
The Positive Peace Society Team
